What is the same under RA 11934?

The SIM Registration Act applies regardless of whether the line is on Globe or Smart. For an individual, the carrier registration record includes the assigned mobile number and SIM serial number plus the user’s full name, date of birth, sex, address and government-issued photo ID. The registrant also makes a declaration that the information is true and correct.

• A new Philippine SIM is supplied in a deactivated state and requires registration before activation.
• The definition covers a physical SIM, eSIM and an electronic equivalent.
• Registration is free.
• A minor’s SIM is registered under the parent or guardian, with the required consent.
• Foreign tourists and other foreign nationals follow the document route stated in the law and carrier process.
• Companies and government entities use an authorized representative and organizational authority documents.
• False information or fraudulent identification is prohibited.

How the two online flows compare

1. Begin on the correct carrier domain

   Globe users start from Globe’s registration page; Smart users start from Smart’s SIM-registration address. Never paste a Globe OTP into a Smart page or vice versa.

2. Verify control of the line

   Each carrier sends an OTP to the number being registered. A WiFi or modem line may require reading the message from its device inbox instead of a phone.

3. Complete the registrant record

   Enter the identity and address information requested by the live carrier form. Match the accepted ID rather than guessing at abbreviations or spellings.

4. Upload identity evidence

   Both carrier flows require a supported government-issued photo ID and identity/selfie check for the ordinary prepaid route.

5. Review before submission

   Correct typing and image-reading errors, read the carrier privacy notice and confirm the declaration only when the record is accurate.

6. Keep the carrier’s proof

   Save Globe’s reference or Smart’s Control Number and the final carrier confirmation. A requested OTP is not itself proof that registration was approved.

Differences that actually matter

1. Brand and device routing

Globe’s system covers Globe Prepaid, TM and documented Globe device products. Smart’s system covers Smart Prepaid, TNT and documented Smart device products. A router SIM can use the same registration website as the carrier’s phone SIM but require a different way to retrieve the OTP.

2. Carrier reference

Smart’s published guidance tells users to retain a Control Number. Globe uses its own confirmation/reference record. Keep the proof exactly as issued; support cannot use a reference from another carrier.

3. Published ID handling

Both carriers follow the law, but their live forms and image checks can present different document choices and upload behavior. An ID shown in one carrier’s form should not be assumed to appear identically in the other. Choose from the live list and use a clear, unexpired document.

4. Physical-to-eSIM conversion

Globe explicitly says an already registered same-number physical SIM converted through Globe’s supported eSIM route does not need a second registration. Smart currently documents a MySmart self-service conversion for Smart Prepaid and TNT using mobile and email verification, with a Smart Store as an assisted fallback. Follow each carrier’s live conversion result rather than extending one network’s re-registration statement to the other.

5. Support ownership

Globe fixes Globe/TM registration records; Smart fixes Smart/TNT registration records. A retail seller, independent website or the other network cannot edit the carrier database.

How to choose a new Globe or Smart line

SIM registration is not a useful tie-breaker by itself: both carriers must collect the legally required record. For a new line, use a practical, location-specific decision:

• Coverage where you actually use it: check each carrier’s current coverage information and, where possible, test at home, work, school and travel locations. A map is not a performance guarantee inside a particular building.
• Phone and eSIM compatibility: confirm the exact device model, regional variant, lock status and carrier-supported format before purchase.
• Number format and communication needs: decide whether you need a local number, voice and SMS, or only data.
• WiFi or modem use: choose a product intended for the device and learn where its SMS inbox is before beginning registration.
• Support access: consider whether an official store or assisted channel is reasonably accessible for ID, replacement or ownership problems.
• Current plan terms: compare the live carrier offer at purchase time; prices, inclusions and validity change too often for a registration guide to declare a permanent winner.
