SIM Already Registered but No Service: What to Check
A step-by-step diagnosis for a registered SIM with no signal, calls, texts or mobile data—without repeating identity registration blindly.
A “registered” result confirms the carrier has a SIM-registration record; it does not prove that every network and account function is healthy. First verify the status through the carrier’s supported route. Then test signal, account validity, SIM/eSIM state, device compatibility, settings and network availability as separate issues. If the portal says “already registered” but you did not complete or recognize that registration, contact the carrier immediately instead of trying to override it.
Separate five different questions
| Question | What it tells you | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Is the SIM registration approved? | Whether the carrier accepted the identity record. | Use the carrier’s confirmation, portal/app status or official support. See status methods by carrier. |
| Is the line activated/provisioned? | Whether the network has enabled service on a new, replacement, converted or ported SIM. | Ask the carrier to check activation/provisioning; do not infer it from the identity status alone. |
| Is the account still valid and unbarred? | Whether ordinary expiry, billing, security, loss or another account condition blocks use. | Check the official account/support channel. Registration does not prevent ordinary SIM or subscription expiry. |
| Does the SIM/eSIM work? | Whether the card, profile or device slot is detected. | Check device settings and, where safe, test the SIM in another compatible device. |
| Is the network available? | Whether coverage or an outage affects service. | Move to another location, check official advisories and compare with another line on the same network. |
Diagnosis in the safest order
Save the exact registration result
Keep the carrier confirmation, reference or Control Number. If the message is a review or returned state, follow that instruction instead of treating it as approved.
Restart and check the line is enabled
Turn off Airplane Mode, restart the phone or router and make sure the correct physical SIM slot or eSIM profile is switched on.
Identify the service that fails
Test incoming SMS, outgoing SMS, voice and mobile data separately. “No service” is different from “data does not work.”
Check account state with the carrier
Ask whether the line is active, barred, expired, awaiting provisioning, reported lost or affected by a plan/billing condition.
Check device and settings
Confirm network mode is automatic, mobile data is assigned to the intended line and APN settings have not been replaced by an unverified tutorial.
Test coverage and hardware
Try another location. Where the product and warranty allow it, test the SIM in a compatible device to separate a SIM problem from a handset problem.
Escalate with evidence
Give official support the number, product, status evidence, exact device message and which services fail. Do not disclose the OTP.
Match the symptom to the next step
| Symptom | Check first | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| “Already registered” in portal, no confirmation saved | Use the carrier’s supported status route and ask support to verify ownership if needed. | Do not assume a new submission is required. |
| No bars / Emergency calls only | Line enabled, Airplane Mode, carrier coverage, SIM detection and account bar. | Do not assume identity registration failed. |
| Bars appear, but no calls or SMS | Activation/provisioning, account state, outgoing/incoming restrictions and device compatibility. | Do not change registration data to fix a network-service block. |
| Calls/texts work, mobile data does not | Data balance/plan, mobile-data line selection, APN and coverage. | Registration is probably not the only relevant check. |
| New eSIM installed, no network | Profile enabled, correct line selected, device carrier lock and carrier provisioning. | Do not delete the profile before checking its recovery rules. |
| Home WiFi is registered, no internet | Router signal, SIM detection, account/data state and device setup. | A registered badge does not guarantee an active data allocation. |
| SIM worked before, then stopped | Ordinary expiry, account bar, loss report, outage, damaged SIM or device issue. | Do not assume the 2023 registration deadline is relevant to a current line. |
Confirm registration without creating a duplicate
- Globe Prepaid: Globe’s current FAQ points to its confirmation text, registered indicator in its official account channel and re-entry through the official registration portal to check a missing confirmation.
- Smart/TNT and Smart Bro: Smart documents status through its official registration portal and supported account channel.
- DITO: retain the registration confirmation and use official DITO support when status and service disagree.
- GOMO: check the official GOMO PH app/help route; do not use a third-party “status checker.”
There is no universal SMS keyword or USSD code for every network. Use the current status guide, and never submit your number to an independent checker.
If “already registered” is unexpected
Stop trying to override the record
Do not vary the name, ID or birthday and do not pay someone to “unlock” it.
Preserve the message and purchase details
Keep the packaging, SIM serial information, receipt and screenshot of the official error. Hide sensitive details in any public post.
Contact the carrier through a verified route
Explain whether the SIM was new, replacement, converted, ported or bought from another person. Globe explicitly directs users with this message to official support or a store.
Treat a pre-registered sale as a safety problem
Do not use the line for banking or account recovery until ownership is resolved. Read the pre-registered SIM risk guide.
Escalate unresolved identity misuse
Keep the carrier case reference and follow the NTC complaint route where appropriate.
Phone and physical-SIM checks
- Confirm the phone detects the SIM and displays the expected carrier.
- Turn off Airplane Mode and restart the phone.
- Remove and reseat a removable SIM only with the device powered down if the manufacturer instructs it.
- Set network selection/mode back to the manufacturer’s or carrier’s automatic/default option.
- In a dual-SIM phone, confirm which line handles mobile data, calls and messages.
- Check whether the phone is locked to another carrier or the device/IMEI is barred.
- Ask the carrier before changing APN values or replacing the SIM.
Globe’s current network guide recommends restarting, checking Airplane Mode and automatic network mode, then testing the SIM in another phone to separate device and SIM faults. Smart’s help similarly recommends checking the account, coverage, device, default APN and another compatible device.
eSIM and Home WiFi distinctions
eSIM
Check that the correct profile is installed and enabled, that the phone is compatible and unlocked, and that the carrier has provisioned the converted or newly issued line. Do not delete the eSIM as a first troubleshooting step; QR and recovery rules differ. See eSIM registration and conversion guidance.
Home WiFi or pocket WiFi
Check the router’s SIM and network indicators, its account/data state, and its official dashboard. A WiFi network can be visible even when the cellular modem has no service. Use the matching guide: Globe At Home, Smart Bro, PLDT Home WiFi or DITO Home WiFi.

What to report
Tell support: the number and product, registration result/reference, whether it is new/replacement/converted/ported, exact device message, signal bars, whether calls/texts/data each work, account state shown in the official channel, device model and troubleshooting already completed. Do not provide an OTP or post an ID image publicly.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my registered SIM not working?
Registration may be approved while activation, account validity, signal, device, SIM profile, settings or network service has a separate problem.
What does “already registered” mean?
The carrier already has a registration record for that number. If you do not recognize it, contact official support immediately.
Does registration prevent prepaid expiry?
No. Globe explicitly says SIM registration does not prevent ordinary expiry, and account-validity rules remain separate from identity registration.
Why do I have bars but no mobile data?
Check the data balance/plan, selected data line, APN/default settings, coverage and account state. Registration alone does not supply data service.
Why does my new eSIM show no service?
Check profile installation/enabling, device compatibility or lock and carrier provisioning. Do not delete it until you know the QR recovery rule.
Can a registered Home WiFi SIM still have no internet?
Yes. Router signal, SIM detection, account/data state and configuration can fail independently of registration.
When should I escalate to the NTC?
After using the carrier’s formal support route and preserving the case reference, evidence and unresolved response.
