Local vs Travel eSIM in the Philippines: Which One Do You Need?
Separate Philippine carrier eSIMs, Philippine traveler eSIMs and foreign worldwide data profiles before you buy—because the word “travel” does not tell you who issued the SIM or whether local registration applies.
Choose a local Philippine carrier eSIM when you need a Philippine mobile number and the product’s local calls, SMS or data; register it under RA 11934. A Philippine carrier’s traveler eSIM is still a local Philippine SIM and foreign tourists must register it. Choose a foreign or worldwide travel eSIM when its stated roaming/data service is enough; it may be data-only and may not include a Philippine number or ordinary SMS. Check the issuer and service terms, not the marketing label.

Apple’s current travel guidance likewise distinguishes eSIMs bought from a local carrier in the destination from plans sold by worldwide service providers. The product contract and issuer determine what you actually receive.

What a foreign tourist needs for a local Philippine eSIM
RA 11934 requires a foreign tourist registering a local SIM to provide their full name, nationality, passport number and Philippine address, and present:
- Passport.
- Proof of address in the Philippines, such as the evidence accepted by the live carrier process.
- A return ticket to the tourist’s home country or another ticket showing the date and time of departure from the Philippines.
The Act says a SIM registered under the foreign-tourist subsection is temporarily valid for 30 days and automatically deactivates when that validity expires. If you hold another visa type, use the applicable foreign-resident/other-visa document route rather than presenting yourself as a tourist.

Globe Traveler eSIM
Globe describes its Traveler eSIM as a digital SIM for tourists visiting the Philippines. Globe says it can be installed before arrival but must be registered upon arrival because its registration OTP is received after the eSIM connects to Globe’s Philippine network. Globe also states that foreigners must comply with the SIM Registration Law.
Use Globe’s live product page for its current data, call, text, price, validity, refund and device terms; do not rely on an old comparison table for a purchase decision.
Smart Prepaid eSIM for a visitor
Smart says visitors may obtain a Smart Prepaid eSIM at its airport booths or through the Smart Online Store, subject to current availability, and must register it at smart.com.ph/simreg to use Smart mobile services. Smart also says the visitor’s device must be unlocked.
Other local products
DITO’s official traveler-product page makes the same important legal point for its traveler SIM: the foreign user must complete SIM registration and seller staff may assist but should not register it in place of the user. For any DITO eSIM or GOMO product, verify the live product type, buyer eligibility and registration route before purchase.
What to check on a worldwide travel eSIM
A worldwide product can be useful, but “works in the Philippines” is not a complete specification. Before paying, find clear answers on the provider’s own site:
- Issuer: who sells and supports the profile?
- Service type: data only, or does it include a usable number, voice and SMS?
- Coverage: which Philippine partner network or networks are stated, and is selection automatic or manual?
- Validity trigger: purchase, installation, first network connection or manual activation?
- Data terms: fixed allowance, throttling/fair-use conditions, top-up and expiry.
- Tethering: whether hotspot use is permitted.
- Device rules: exact eSIM compatibility, unlocked status and any prohibited regions/models.
- QR and transfer: whether reinstallation or a device change is supported.
- Refund policy: especially after a QR is delivered or profile installation begins.
- Identity checks: what the provider requires and which privacy policy governs the data.
If the product is data-only, it cannot receive ordinary carrier SMS on a local number it does not provide. Internet calling and messaging apps may work over data, but that is different from having local voice/SMS service.

Confirm model, regional variant, eSIM support, free profile capacity and carrier-unlocked status.
Read the live product terms
Confirm service, network, validity trigger, data limits, hotspot, transfer, refund and support before payment.
Prepare the correct identity route
For a local Philippine line, gather the tourist or other-visa documents. For a worldwide provider, follow its stated account checks.
Install without exposing the QR
Use a private connection and the official instructions. Do not post or forward the QR or let an unknown seller remotely control the phone.
Register a Philippine carrier eSIM
Complete the issuing carrier’s official identity process. For Globe Traveler eSIM, Globe says registration occurs after arrival when the line can receive its OTP on Globe’s network.
Set the active lines deliberately
Choose which line handles data, voice and SMS, and review data switching/roaming settings so the home line does not create unintended charges.
